Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation Sedation in Rio Grande City & Weslaco, TX

Is your child anxious about going to the dentist? Do they have a hard time getting dental treatment done? At Smile & Shine, our children’s dentist offers inhalation sedation services, to make their experience a better one. Sedation helps patients feel as comfortable as possible while still awake and aware of their surroundings. It is recommended for your child to be on an empty stomach before administering this type of sedative.

Nitrous, which is often called “laughing gas,” is a very safe, mild sedative that will help your child remain relaxed during dental procedures. This sedative is administered with the use of a mask, which carries air (oxygen) mixed with the medication.

Your children’s dentist will help explain the process to your and your child before treatment so you and your child know what to expect.

The dentist will put the small nose piece on your child and make sure they are comfortable. Your child will be asked to breathe through the nose, not the mouth, and will sense a faint, sweet smell.

The sedation will take effect in about 5 minutes and the mask will remain in place until the procedure is done. Your child will be awake during the entire procedure and may have a “happy” feeling. When the procedure is complete, the nitrous oxide will be turned off and your child will breathe in pure oxygen for about 5 minutes to clear out any remaining gas.
Our children’s dentist office will use this treatment method in hopes that someday your child will be comfortable without it. If your child could benefit from sedation, please call our office in Rio Grande City or Weslaco, TX.
